Role Overview
The Nursery Assistant will work closely with and report directly to the Nursery Manager. The role involves supporting the daily growth, development, and maintenance of the nursery. You will play a key role in cultivating trees, managing irrigation systems, monitoring plant health, and supervising daily orchard activities. This position also includes leadership responsibilities, such as overseeing a small team of unskilled workers and ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and safely.
Key Responsibilities
The main duties of the Nursery Assistant include:
- Cultivating trees and assisting with the planting of new stock
- Assisting with the propagation of pistachio and walnut trees
- Assessing pest and disease risks and applying chemical treatments when required
- Assisting with soil testing and monitoring tree growth and development
- Carrying out scheduled watering using controlled automatic irrigation systems
- Considering irrigation scheduling factors, including soil water-holding capacity and tree requirements
- Grading trees and managing spacing and movement within the nursery
- Transplanting, weeding, and general nursery maintenance
- Performing basic tree maintenance, including pruning
- Supervising harvesting activities to prevent tree damage
- Identifying and addressing any harvesting-related damage to maintain tree productivity
- Implementing disease and pest control in line with environmental standards
- Maintaining high hygiene standards across orchard and production facilities
- Acting as a daily team leader, supervising and coordinating unskilled workers
Qualifications and Experience
To be successful in this role, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Qualifications in a relevant horticulture or agriculture field
- A minimum of 2 years’ recent and relevant experience in horticulture production or agriculture
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Proven ability to work effectively as part of a team
- Leadership skills to supervise and guide a small team
- Strong problem-solving and critical thinking abilities
- Good oral communication skills
