Role Purpose

The Sheep Dairy Shepherd assists the Farm Manager and team in all aspects of running a sheep dairy farm. This includes supporting milking operations, animal health programs, lamb rearing, feed management, machinery operation, and general farm maintenance to ensure efficient and compliant farm performance.

Key Responsibilities

Animal Management

  • Implement animal health programs to maintain herd wellbeing.
  • Assist with lambing and lamb rearing to minimize losses.
  • Maintain accurate herd and farm records.

Quality Systems

  • Support compliance with farm quality standards.
  • Assist with Farm Log Book and record-keeping requirements.

Feed Production

  • Assist with feed planning and management.
  • Support weed and pest control activities.
  • Help manage feeding programs and maintain feed inventory quality.

Milking Operations

  • Ensure effective operation of the milking parlour.
  • Maintain plant hygiene and somatic cell count standards.
  • Assist with RMP recording and audit requirements.

Effluent Management

  • Operate and maintain the farm’s effluent system.
  • Maintain compliance with regional council regulations.
  • Keep accurate effluent management records.

Business & Maintenance

  • Support repair and maintenance of machinery and infrastructure.
  • Maintain professional relationships with vets, contractors, and stock agents.
  • Follow company policies and farm procedures.

Teamwork & Communication

  • Participate actively in daily farm tasks.
  • Provide guidance to junior staff where required.
  • Communicate issues promptly to management and escalate when necessary.

Requirements

  • Physically fit and capable of handling manual farm work.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug test.
  • Must provide an updated CV.
  • Valid driver’s licence required.
  • Must reside in on-site farm accommodation (shared or private depending on availability).
  • No pets allowed.
  • No prior experience required (training provided).
